Eastenders leads 2012 British Soap Award nominations

At last year's British Soap Awards, ITV soap Coronation Street and its cast were the biggest winners, taking home an impressive nine awards. However, this year BBC soap Eastenders is looking likely to outdo its rivals as they have received 18 nominations, four more than Coronation Street which has 14.

Eastenders' nominations include Best Single Episode and Best British Soap, as well as several nods for individual actors. Jo Joyner (pictured right), who plays cancer sufferer Tanya Jessop in the BBC series, could go home with three awards. She is nominated for Best Actress, Best Storyline and Best Partnership for her on-screen relationship with Jake Wood's character, Max Branning.

Most of the award winners are decided by a panel of experts, but there are six categories which are voted for by the public via the British Soap Awards website. The award ceremony, where we get the strange treat of seeing the inhabitants of Albert Square mix with those of Weatherfield, will take place later this month at The London Studios and will be broadcast on ITV1 in May.
